![]() ![]() Hallo, and to the 'Linux & Unix' section here at BC. Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2394 MhzīIOS Version/Date Dell Computer Corporation A07, System Manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB (Maximum possible) Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 GenuineIntel ~1196 Mhz OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Speccy says: Intel® Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor-M) RAM 1GB, HDD 16GB 7GB Free, CPU Pentium 4, 1.8Ghz. Also I need a Windows 10 machine to update my Garmin satnav. I could add a Linux OS to the T420 Thinkpad dual booting with windows.but I would like to have a solid backup machine before I start messing around with that one. I could probably work with Bionic Pup 8.0 – 32 Bit or antiX 19.3.Base on my old Dell GX270.Īm I flogging a dead horse trying to use the Thinkpad for web surfing and light word processing? To summarise some Puppies were ok on my old Thinkpad but I never found one with a working web browser “out of the box” or how to update to a usable current browser. It did boot in my Dell desktop but I was lost when it offered a “Command Line Install” failed when I tried to log in as root it asked for a password and I gave up! Tried this antiX 19.3.Base live DVD with the R40e, fails at or after boot showing a blank screen.ĭownloaded and burnt an AntiX 19.3 – Core live DVD. I was quite pleased with it but could not find the equivalent of “My computer” or “This PC”. ![]() antiX 19.3.Base ran OK for half a day connected to web via ethernet. Had to take pot luck with options, for example chose “Safe Video Mode”, got to Firefox 78.3.0 ESR – 32 Bit. I don’t know enough to understand why so after a bit of reading tried antiX 19.3.Base as a Live DVD. Not tried with Dell.īionic Pup 8.0 – 32 Does not load to IBM r40e. Works in part but, for example, won’t run youtube videos and appears to need updating to cope with current websites? Puppy Tahr 6.0.51 loaded to IBM R40e laptop. Precise Puppy - 5.7.1 loaded to IBM R40e laptop. Puppy – 4.3.1 loaded to both IBM R40e laptop and to a Dell GX270. That would allow me to keep WinXP which suits my CAD software etc as a dual boot running alongside a “new” Linux OS. Phase two would be to tidy up the HDD of the Dell desktop moving a substantial amount of old files to archive. I hoped firstly to move the IBM ThinkPad to Linux OS which I would like to use for access to the internet and simple word processing. So that was replaced by a ThinkPad T420 running Win10 which I do not get on with. I did have a Sony Vaio running Win7 which sadly died of tea tsunami (twice!) and I have not been able to find a replacement keyboard. As you know better than I, Firefox ESR 52.9.0 (32-bit) is the end of the line for XP users. Some videos do not play and some web sites state that my browser needs to be updated. Both work quite well considering their age but not so well on the internet. I run WinXP on two old computers, an IBM ThinkPad (circa 2003). Will it auto-connect to my network & can I get on-line immediately?Īnd one more: Can I try it first from a Live DVD? Hello all, my first post since registering 11 months you have identified my needs correctly: ![]()
